To my 10-year-old self

Hi, my 10-year-old self,

I hope you’re doing good and having fun with your life, I know you start to seeing life differently and everything around you changing. Don’t worry everything is going to be alright, at least for a while. You will be having fun with your toys, hanging out with your friends, your biggest problem will be fighting with your brother. However, I have to warn you because I want you to be careful. You know there’s a huge box on your brothers’ table, it reflects light, called computer and there s huge boxes in your parent’s hand and they put to that on their ear, called phones? That will become your biggest enemy and fear. You probably wondering how? Let me explain to you.

First, those big boxes turn to small tiny boxes, with lots of thing inside it which makes your life easier. In a one year, laptops start to release, phones going to start change. You will be able to carry them everywhere. You will able to search whatever you want, you don’t have to look at the books anymore! You will able to chat with your parents and friends without talking to them!  And after a few years more, you will not need maps, you will not need to write everything on paper, and you will save thousands of paper, you will able to reach anything you need to know with one click, you will able to order your food without calling them and so on. All of these sounds amazing, isn’t it? They are, but this technology will come with the monster. That monster called “social media”

When this monster came, first you’ll not understand what’s going on but you ‘ll start the recognize some changes. For example, people start to talk with each other less often, they will stop going out and play games or going for dinner. Even they go out they will start to take photos of the dinner and not going to eat those foods. You even will see they are getting harm to take photos. You will see everybody trapped on their phone, you will see how this monster eating humans without their awareness. you probably don’t like it, actually, you will hate it how media control you and other people. How this monster has different arms and legs. They called Instagram,  Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Linkedin, Whatsapp and so on, it has many other arms and legs but these are the strongest ones.

This monster is so tricky Simay, it has lots of benefits but looks beautiful at the first but it’s only an illusion.  Instagram makes you see lots of different photos all over the world, what are your friends doing and give you awesome tips but it also changes who you are. People who were eaten by this monster, usually depersonalize with themselves and lose their self-respect, they looking other peoples lives and want it, or they show how their awesome lives every moment, this is just an illusion, they are just doing this to get an attention which they will able to find if they stop looking to Instagram, other apps are not too much different from Instagram, all of them eats you and drain your life energy. You start to look at your phone every minute of your life, always try to gain attention by posting to these social media apps, shape your life around it, it’s not different than a relationship based on self-interest.

This monster also giving birth to the other monsters too like cyber bullying. You will be faced with this so much, but don’t worry, it will pass. There are laws for this and it will protect you. Cyberbullying means “attacking”, “bullying” from online. When your friends want to make fun of you, all they need to do write or post something so that other people can say this and make fun of you. Some people make harm only to be famous. The only thing you need to know about this, PEOPLE ONLY ENTERING SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD AND DOING ALL THESE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO HIDE THEIR WEAKNESSES!! To waste time ( this will remind them how empty they are), show how their life is awesome (on the contrary, it’s terrible), to gain friends ( they don’t . have an act of courage to talk in real life) and so on. This monster can grow and continue to manipulate people for wrong things, and change the social norms (more than 2019) But don’t worry. As long as you know this you will be fine.

Brand’s Usage of Social Media

 

The brand’s like Misguided, Nike, Coca-Cola Domino’s, KLM. Lego, General Electic, L’Oreal, Dove, “Kim Kardashian” use social media to achieve their business and marketing strategy. They see social media as a tool to reach their customers. And it is. Social media is a tool for them to get feedback, expanding their demographic, doing advertisement, increasing their sales.

Misguided is a brand who sales clothes. They’re not different than H&M, Zara or any clothing shop except one thing. They’re using social media more effectively than any other brand. They know who there demographic:

young female consumers= the people who grow up in the social media world and they know how to reach them too= social media. They have more than 3 million followers on Instagram, they have a 1.2 million Facebook likes, to reach this they used celebrities and social media which is what their customers want! They get feedback from multiple channels, they used every social media tool to shape their customers. This is what most of the brand needs to do. Even though they’re not a big company like Nike, Coca-Cola Domino’s, KLM. Lego, General Electic, L’Oreal, Dove, they’re so close to becoming one of these best brands thanks to their campaigns like socially-conscious body positivity on Instagram, and their APP! Their app introduces various features like swipe right-swipe left. They’re up to date and I believe this is what makes them successful.

Social media is nowadays the most usable tool who wants to show the product to their customers. Nike using multiple platforms to reach their customers such as; Twitter= hashtags such as #Breaking2 or 30th anniversary Just Do It campaign who demonstrated by Colin Kaepernick. In #Breaking2 they broadcast a Livestream video of Eliud Kipchoge’s with Nike shoes on Facebook. They used athletes and celebrities in advertisements on multiple channels like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook.

Coca-Cola is not doing anything different than Nike. They using celebrities and athletes like Kendall Jenner and many others. But they also using Youtube to feature Doddy and Manny. They are using tv and other transmedia tools effectively however, except Youtube and Twitter, they’re not using Instagram, Facebook effectively. I believe that if they use Instagram or Facebook to reach their customers and play some games with them( such as Trivia, which related to coca -cola) that would affect their demographic and help them to interact with their customers better.

Brands like oca-Cola Domino’s, KLM. Lego, General Electic, L’Oreal, Dove mostly doing something, they’re using mainly Instagram and Twitter to show their charity works, advertisements, photos of the customers and so on. They use Facebook to get feedbacks. However, there’s one brand who use social media better than anybody else and that is the “Kim Kardashian”.Different from other brands I discussed, he is individually a brand. Kim Kardashian and her family is using social media to be a brand. They’re broadcasting, tweeting, posting photos and so on, because they know without social media they wouldn’t exist. They’re doing this every day and every moment of their life.  I can’t say they’re the example how brands must use their social media but they definitely need to take a lesson and that is; today’s technological world, everybody has phones and they’re voting by using social media, they’re not looking advertisements on newspaper anymore. They’re voting by subscribing, watching, liking and as Kim Kardashian proved without social media they would be lost and forgotten.

Why Fox News, when I want to read the opposite view?

First of all, I’m not a political person, I mean I don’t prefer to read news about politics if it’s not necessary, especially about the USA. However, to learn what’s going on the world  I generally read and search top news. Because I’m not interested, my point of view might offend some people or maybe completely right/wrong. That’s why I put a source which supports my article.

I’m a liberal person. This means I believe to a political system that emphasizes a person’s autonomy, equality of opportunity, and importance and protection of individual rights, and against the state and private economic actors, including business. When I want to learn the news I often read/watching news from CNN, CBS, ABC. However, when I want to read the opposite view to see news from another point of view, I’m reading news from Fox News, Washington Post, New York Post.  It helps me to understand see things in a bigger picture. Especially, if it’s politics, it’s important to learn news from different perspectives.

CNN, CBS, ABC generally trying to not to give a perspective or trying not to put their ideas on the news, in case of the opposite view. However, it’s easy to understand their approach is liberal by observing which news they’re choosing to publish or the words they are choosing to use. On the other hand, Fox News, Washington Post, New York Post, shows their political approach openly.   Fox News, always has been always in the middle of numerous controversies and allegations.  It’s generally criticized because of it’s a support to the Republican Party.   According to the Howards Dean, it’s a ” right-wing propaganda machine” and he’s right. Best way to manipulate people is using media mediums and Fox News doing this very clearly.   The best proof of this is an article I shared below which says “Want to live a happier life? Be a conservative!”  and many news like these… It was like this in George w. Bush times( makes sense because his cousin was the projection team manager when he was the candidate). Even though we don’t see clear examples like this often, the news is generally about Trump and Trump’s point of view.

When we looked at the Top News of Fox News,

1. The 7 big investigations of Trump, explained…
2. Melanie invited a bullied kid to the SOTU. She ignored thousands bullied because of the president’s language
3. In a remarkable exchange, Trump offers a startling view of the role of the free press
4.  Trump to highlight economic prosperity, call for border security in State of the Union

I want to highlight some of the words in here. ” remarkable”, “big”.  These kind of words are active words, which takes the attention of people and lead them to read articles like this. Also, almost all of the top news is about Trump. I believe one of the reasons of the Fox News demographics is conservative is this.

The second reason is readers prefer to read or watch which comforts them and agree with them not make them angry.

And the third reason is, all channels and newspaper have their own demographic because they know they can’t agree with everybody. According to the American Trends panel, we can see lots of websites, blogs, newspapers, channels have their own approach. I believe without this approaches people won’t read them.

Overall, for this 12 hour, I replaced CNN to Fox News, to observe conservative approach on the news and these are the reasons why I choose Fox News.
